What is a Song Circle?

Song-Bird-Blue.png

In a song circle, we learn easy-to-memorize songs that we sing as a group. And guess what..? You don’t have to be an experienced singer at all! It is so empowering to sing beyond what society deems a “good singer”. This is a safe space to practice opening our voices in a non-judgmental, supportive and loving group container, while singing songs that remind us of our power, truth and belonging.

What are the different song circles at Singing in Love?

There is a vast variety of song circle types; some contain numerous harmonies, multiple parts, and even fun activities that go along with them! Others include improvisation, vocal opening, circle singing and much more. Many circles have themes such as the elements, personal empowerment, spiritual upliftment, grief, and so on.

Daytime song circles will be facilitated by experienced or master song leaders coming from all over the U.S.

At night we will have an open fire circle where anyone can teach a song to the group in a "popcorn" style

Participation Tips

  • Harmonize ~ Attune yourself to the song leader by listening attentively and blending your voice or instrument in harmony. If you're unfamiliar with the melody or arrangement, take a moment to absorb the rhythm and essence before joining in.

  • Respect the Silence Honor the stillness within and between songs, recognizing that these pauses hold the power to connect us deeper.

  • Embodied Singing ~ Breathe deeply into your heart and let your soul shine through your voice. Allow the song's message to resonate within you, and integrate its essence into your being.

  • Inclusive Sharing ~ In group-led sessions, create a supportive environment by inviting and making space for those who may be less confident or outgoing to share their voice. Encourage participation and foster a sense of community.

Feeding the Songs

After a song, we take a moment of silence to let the experience sink in. Then, folks are encouraged to “feed the song” by sharing how the song affected them, saying 'thank you song for...'. Songs are living beings that are channeled into manifestation and require nourishment and nurture. This tradition is how that happens, for gratitude is the food for songs, and it also reflects to the song leader the impact of the song.

Singing in Love Song Sharing Tips

  • This is a communal singing gathering, not a performance space. All are welcome to share songs during designated times and spaces to do so, but any song shared must be taught so the group can sing it together.

  • Instruments are welcome, but the main creative and musical expression happens with and through the singing voices. If one desires to accompany a song with instrumentation, this must be agreed upon by the song-sharer, and instruments are always in support of the song, never the primary focus.

  • We strive to be culturally sensitive in our singing community by being aware of a song's history and cultural context. We research or ask if we're unsure about a song's origins, and avoid cultural appropriation by sharing songs with proper understanding, permission, and credit. We show respect for the traditions and communities that songs come from, and acknowledge a song's origins and give credit when we can.. By being open to learning and growing, we welcome correction or guidance from someone from the culture or tradition, and aim to build trust, respect, and inclusivity in our community.

  • There's no one "right" way to sing a song. If you have a different version than what is being shared/taught, we may respectfully mention it after a song finishes, but not to correct the person who shared, simply to offer another perspective and shape and form the song has taken as it spreads its’ magic around the world.

  • Be considerate of noise levels, avoiding loud talking, laughing, or instrument playing that might disturb a circle in progress. Be mindful of singing or playing music nearby a song circle, especially at volumes that may compete with a circle.

  • Be gentle and kind when encouraging someone to sing, or when giving feedback to those who have shared a song, as singing can be an extremely vulnerable experience for some. Many times opening and sharing our voices can touch upon deeply rooted trauma and insecurities, so we need to hold one another with grace and compassion before, during and after songs are shared.

Important Information

Although this whole experience is extremely uplifting, there are some songs and song circles can potentially activate deep emotions. A few circles may even have specific themes like grief and shadow work. There is a Soul Support team on site who are there to assist in holding space for us to regulate our nervous systems. Please be aware that they are not offering therapy.
